Frequently Asked Questions

  • Material inclusion varies by class type. Pottery wheel classes at Slow Clay Centre include all materials and firing costs. Jewellery making courses include materials for Stage 1 students, while Stage 2-3 students pay for silver by weight. Painting classes, kids' workshops, and most specialized classes (resin art, alcohol inks, mosaic) provide all materials. Check individual class descriptions for specific material policies.

  • Class sizes are kept small for personalized instruction. Friday Night Taster Wheel Throwing classes cap at 12 students. Jewellery taster classes limit to 7 people maximum. Linocut printmaking limits to 4 students due to studio space. The Writing and Illustrating Picture Book course is kept to 5 attendees exclusively for maximum one-on-one time. Smaller class sizes ensure adequate hands-on time with instructors.

  • Pottery course lengths vary by type. The Friday Night Taster Wheel Throwing is a single 2-hour session. Beginner's wheel courses run for 8 weeks with weekly classes. The 2-Day Pottery Wheel Intensive spans a full weekend. Form & Surface and other foundational courses are 8-week programs. Holiday clay club courses run over two consecutive half-day sessions (9:30am-12pm).

  • No prior experience is required for beginner and taster classes. Jewellery taster classes specifically state 'no formal entry requirements' and note you do not need to be artistic or creative. Pottery wheel taster classes are structured introductions for those who have never tried wheel throwing. However, intermediate and advanced pottery courses require completion of at least two beginner-level terms to enroll.

  • Finished pottery pieces are glazed and kiln-fired, then made available for collection several weeks later. In the Friday Night Taster class, students get two pieces fired and ready to collect. For family pottery classes, items are available for collection at the studio or can be posted at the participant's own cost. Raku firing workshops involve immediate firing during the class itself (3-hour session).

  • Yes, multiple options are available. Clay Club runs holiday courses over two half-day sessions for children. Kids Painting classes are offered during school holidays for ages 5+. Family Pottery Classes accommodate one adult and one child (additional child tickets available). Life drawing and painting classes for kids ages 5yo+ are offered after school. Most children's classes include all materials and have age-appropriate instruction.
